A) So people in “the Middle East and Pakistan” are backwards!
B) backwardness is defined as “Israel can exist with the rights of Palestinians” and “tolerance of homosexuality”?

I wonder if the author saw the RNC’s position on marriage equality, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, etc (just as a very simple example). By that definition the platform for one of the two parties vying for presidency and vice presidency of the United States is backwards. Let us not forget that by popular media logic that since every non-“Western” Muslim person is representative of all Muslims/Muslim governments, then this shall also be applied to the US: The US is itself a backwards country!

This also reminds me of a point Kawlture and I made a while ago in our letter to the “saviors” of Muslim LGBTQI:

“Non-heteronormative Muslims are not the (new) measuring stick by which you judge weather or not cultures/societies/countries/religious traditions are deemed as ‘modern/civilized/1st world’!”

(Edit: Apart from defining what is and what is not backwards as N Atlantic-centric, the author - who wants to dispel rumors of the “Muslim Menace” - doesn’t question that the Middle East and Pakistan are “backwards”)
